Hereditary Cancer Screening Overview

  • Over 1 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer each year.
  • Of these diagnoses, approximately 5-10% of the genesis of the cancer is contributed to genetic factors.
  • The Hereditary Cancers (which can include breast, ovarian, colorectal cancers and others), have in common Cancer Predisposition Genes (CPCs) which are mutations passed on from generation to generation.
  • CLIO Laboratories Hereditary Cancer Screen is able to detect the presence of these CPCs.

The Genetics of Cancer

  • Cancer is a genetic disease—that is, cancer is caused by certain changes to genes that control the way our cells function, especially how they grow and divide
  • Genes carry the instructions to make proteins, which do much of the work in our cells.
  • Certain gene changes can cause cells to evade normal growth controls and become cancer.
  • Genetic changes that promote cancer can be inherited from our parents.

Hereditary Cancer Syndromes

  • Inherited genetic mutations play a major role in about 5 to 10 percent of all cancers.
  • Researchers have associated mutations in specific genes with more than 50 hereditary cancer syndromes, which are disorders that may predispose individuals to developing certain cancers.
  • Genetic tests for hereditary cancer syndromes can tell whether a person from a family that shows signs of such a syndrome has one of these mutations.

Cancer Diagnosis is Complex

  • At the molecular level, cancer is caused by mutation (s) in DNA which results in aberrant cell proliferation. Some people inherit mutation(s) in the germline.
  • Approximately 0.3% of the population are carriers of a genetic mutation that has a large effect on cancer risk and these cause about 5-10% of all cancers.

What is the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act? (GINA)

  • In 2008, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) became federal law for all U.S. residents.
  • GINA prohibits discrimination based on genetic information in determining health insurance eligibility or rates and suitability for employment.
  • GINA does not cover members of the military, and it does not apply to life insurance, disability insurance, or long-term care insurance.

Does HIPAA cover a person’s genetic information?

  • Yes, it is covered by the Privacy Rule of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.
  • The Privacy Rule requires that health care providers and others with medical record access protect the privacy of health information, sets limits on the use and release of health records, and empowers people to control certain uses and sharing of their health-related information.
